60 Minutes of FEAR |
May 15, 2008, 13:38
This Saturday May 17th Evergreen Speedway will host its annual 60 Minutes of FEAR. This premiere, west coast figure eight racing event, has been host to wild success and crushing blows to many a figure eight racing team through the years. Last years 60 Minutes winner Ricky “The Kid” Deitz returns to defend his title, albeit a little worse for the wear. Two weeks ago, Ricky while working on a racecar late on a Friday night, badly injured his finger. Taken to the hospital, doctors were unable to save part of his finger and had to remove it. The next day was race day and Ricky hung tough to finish third in the main event. After a week of healing he will be back, along with current points leader and defending Pawn X-Change Super Figure Eight Champion John “The Cowboy” Carlson to run the 60 Minutes. Ryan Gunderson, Doug Delfel, Troy Simianer and others are already pre-entered in this $1500.00 to win race.
 |
| Defending 60 Minutes Champion Deitz |
This timed event (60 minutes) takes the top 18 qualifiers, and two cars moving up from the B-Main, to make the 20 car-starting field. As cars drop out, the finishers (3-8) in the B-Main will enter the event, followed by any remaining cars. Whoever finishes the most laps will be crowned the champion of 60 minutes. Ricky Deitz won the first ever 60 Minutes in 1994 in addition to being its current champion. “The Cowboy” won in 2006. Other than Deitz, Steve Cox (four times a champion) is the only other multiple winner of the event.
Besides the 3/10 mile paved figure eight track, the Pacific Northwest’s third biggest track, the “almost to tough too tame” 3/8’s mile oval will be seeing action as well. The NASCAR Whelen All American Series Speedway Chevrolet Super Stocks & Les Schwab Tires Bombers are scheduled for full main events. Both divisions have had outstanding car counts. Naima Lang has taken the points lead in the Super Stock Division and is already a three time winner. He is followed in points closely by Defending Champion John Zaretzke who is still looking for his first win of the season, Mike Holden, Rookie James Mugge and Jeff Knight round out the top five.
In the Bomber Division it has been a season of ups and downs already with Jim Foti leading the points battle with one win in the books, followed by yet another Defending Champion, Lane Sundholm also looking for his first win of the season. Sundholm has finished second twice and is followed in the points by Clark Casey, Russ Hales and Brian Cottrell. Hornets will round out the evening’s classes and fans are expected early as the weather is cooperating nicely for Saturday. Not far to drive, don’t waste the gas money, let Evergreen Speedway at the Fairgrounds in Monroe be your racing destination of choice this Saturday May 17th. 2008 Championship Battles Shape Up in Evergreen’s Racing Divisions
The NASCAR Whelen All American Series Speedway Chevrolet Super Stock Division this season has seen the biggest car counts and most side by side racing action ever in the first two events of the season. With a new for 2008 double file restart rule, fans were treated to fantastic restarts while competitors were given chances that normally they would never have had. Jeff Knight in last week’s main event caught a late caution flag that gave him the front row spot next to Kelly Mann. If not for that caution Jeff may have been relegated to his battle for second place with Mike Holden and John Zaretzke, however he had the chance for a win. So far defending champion John Zaretzke, driving for new car owners this season, has posted consistent finishes to lead the points. Wins are what he has always been about and certainly he has the equipment and talent to get to victory stage. However, there is a deep pool of talented drivers standing in his way, including Naima Lang with one win already, Mike Holden, Kelly Mann (last weeks winner) and Chris Preston who round out the top five in that order.
Even with Ricky “The Kid” Dietz finally defeating the hot streaking (5 main event wins in a row going back to 2007) “Cowboy” John Carlson in last week’s main event, Carlson continues to lead the point’s battle in the Pawn X-Change Super Figure Eights. With Nick Gunderson and Bill Wade following closely behind, a host of other competitors mean to make it tough for Carlson, the defending champion, to hope for a repeat championship.
For Jim Foti in the Les Schwab Tires Bomber Division this season so far has been about consistency. Consistently winning heat races (2-2) and placing top tens (2-2) and finding himself on top of the points standings after two main events in the 2008 NASCAR Whelen All American Series track championship season. Foti, involved in the 2007 Championship battle, is sure to find a way to win sooner or later this season. A veteran and respected driver, he is strong in traffic and smooth out front.
With a first and third place finish in the first two main events of 2008 “The Mighty” Josh Young finds himself the points leader in the highly entertaining and fan favorite Stinger Eight division. With defending champion Mike Middleton and Josh Laitila tied for second place in points and “The Wizard” Ben Chandler along with Seth Funden rounding out the top five.
This week the NASCAR Whelen All American Series continues its march towards the various championships with all the classes mentioned in action and the Crash Cars! as well. Front gates open at 5:00pm with Racing at 7:00pm. This season all heat races begin after 7:00pm making it a non stop racing adventure keeping fans and race teams on their toes!
Don’t miss the Les Schwab Tires Evergreen Drift program this Friday May 2nd !!

| Kelly Mann Wins April 26th |
The top tier Speedway Chevrolet Super Stocks started the evening with hotly contested heat races that featured a fabulous battle with a side-by-side, lap after lap race between Jason Frasier and Kelly Mann. Eventual heat race winner Jason Frasier was not so lucky in the main event when a first lap melee relegated him and Jeff Holden to the pits for repairs. As the race unfolded, Jeff Knight took command, with Kelly Mann, Mike Holden, John Zaretzke and Rookie James Mugge in pursuit. Kelly Mann wrestled the lead away from Jeff Knight but had to battle him more than once as Evergreen’s “Double File Restart” rule for 2008 showed the fans what real short track Saturday night racing is all about. Mann’s last restart was perfect as he accelerated to victory. On victory stage he referred to his heat race as very exciting and really enjoyed the side-by-side action all evening long.

| Ricky "The Kid" Dietz April 26th |
The Pawn X-Change Super Figure Eights ran another barn burner of a main as “The Cowboy” John Carlson was going for a career best six main events in a row extending back to the 2007 racing season. Ricky “The Kid” Dietz after experiencing tough times the first two weeks finally climbed up onto victory stage. Carlson had troubles in the main and retired to the pits as Dietz after following the Cowboy from the very back of the main to the front held off Nick Gunderson for the win.
 |
| Mike Middleton April 26th |
Stinger Eights had not only an A-Main but a last chance race as well! Defending Champion Mike Middleton came from deep in the pack to dominate a main that was loaded with “intersection” as cars dodged and ducked each other with near misses and some crashes. Another fan favorite main event in the books for the highly entertaining Stinger Eights.
 |
| Patrick Heald April 26th |
The always-enjoyable Hornets ran Evergreen’s custom “road course” and kept fans pointing, laughing and cheering as Patrick Heald, Chris Williamson and Chuck Brewster finished top three consecutively. SVR Construction Services led the field on the parade laps with their shiny new dumpster delivery truck.

After lengthy discussions with NASCAR scoring officials and track officials, the following results have been issued from last week’s main events in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Speedway Chevrolet Super Stock Division and the Les Schwab Tires Bomber Division. In regards to the Super Stock event, discussions were necessary due to an incorrect line-up at the time of the final green flag restart of the main event. Drivers that desire clarification as to the reason for their respective finishing positions are welcome to contact Lex Johnson at the speedway office or via E-Mail at conceptlex@hotmail.com
